Every village has someone who seems to have more energy than everyone else.
In Maplewick, that person is Bernard.
Despite his age, Bernard is rarely sitting still. He’s always off somewhere, getting something done, helping a neighbour, having a chat or simply keeping himself busy.
He has a practical, no-nonsense approach to life and doesn’t see much point in making things complicated.
Bernard is also rather fond of things that have stood the test of time.
Especially his car.
His old car has been around Maplewick for longer than most people can remember, and despite its age — and the occasional complaint from the engine — Bernard absolutely refuses to replace it.
“There’s nothing wrong with it.”
That is usually the end of the discussion.
Everyone else may have their doubts, but Bernard knows his car inside and out. He knows every rattle, every squeak and exactly how long to leave it running before it decides to cooperate.
And somehow, it always gets him where he needs to go.
Bernard is one of those familiar Maplewick characters who brings a sense of continuity to the village. He’s seen plenty of changes over the years, but some things, as far as Bernard is concerned, are perfectly fine just the way they are.
Especially his car.
Don’t suggest replacing it.
You’ll only start an argument.
